The Juniper Tree (Truely Grim) pt. 2

As Juliana’s belly grew full with child she spent every moment she could under the juniper tree. She watched the tree grow, mature, sprout blossoms and fruit. She picked the berries from the tree and ate them in great abundance until she became sick and bedridden.

“If I die,” she told her husband one evening while she was very ill. “Bury me under the juniper tree.”

But she regained her heath, and soon gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, who was as red as blood and as white as snow. Upon seeing her child Juliana’s heart filled with such warmth and joy that it stopped, only moments after he had been born.

Willhelm buried her under the juniper tree as she had wanted. He was very sad for a long time. He raised his son, who’s name was Julian, from a babe with tears in his eyes. It was too soon however that his sorrow faded and Willhelm at last took another wife.

Her name was Mariana, and her skin was the color of ripe pears, but her eyes were like that of a cat. Wise, but jealous, and quick to anger.
