Such As These

Lin caught my smirk before I could hide it. She sighed malodramatically. “Go ahead, do your worst,” she crooned.
“But you’re expecting it, what’s the fun in that?” I taunted, pacing in a tight circle, never tearing my grey eyes from hers of green.
“True. So what are you going to do after?” she asked.
I was caught off guard. “What do you mean?” I barked.
“After you get the reward, silly. You’ve your greatest enemy in your palm, what to do now? Use the cash to get away from this town? Gloat in your higher position?” I considered her words. Should I fulfill my lifelong dream, foiling my nemesis? But that would be turning in my best friend. Darn this debate between friend & dreams!
“I must admit,” I began with a refreshed smirk, “I have enjoyed our little face-offs such as these.”
Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I’m splitting.” I swiped my foot behind her knee, causing her to buckle. I pushed off the dumpster, leaping through the dank window towards my unseen salvation.
