Death Before Your Eyes

A bright spring day, Saul and his family have a picnic. The kids are playing tag as the adults talk of politics and recent TV shows. Saul didn’t consider himself a kid. The kids called the lake that Saul sat at, Lake Death.

“Heads up!” said a young voice. Saul spun around just in time to see a Frisbee smack him right in the nose. “Goddamn it!” Saul yelled. Everyone turned to him. He wasn’t surprised to see Tony’s face. The kid really knew how to piss him off.

It took a while, but Saul soon calmed down. Saul kept to himself and watched as the other kids played in the pond. The picnic seemed to drag on for hours until it happened.

Saul watched as a kid, Mark, dove down under, and came up until minutes later. Dead. But no one saw it. “Oh my god!” Saul nearly screamed. He ran over to the the dock where everyone was already looking at him. “Saul, what’s wrong?” some kid asked. “The kid-” but stopped when he realized it was the kid who asked the question that he had seen drown.

What. The. Hell?*
