With that small affirmation, their meeting came to a close and Lee was escorted out of the doctor’s office.
Walking back to her car, Lee had a realization. That one, seemingly tiny word – “exactly” – held the answer to the one question that had been plaguing her for months.
Foul Play.
The doctor had pretty much confirmed it, although he was careful not to tie himself down to admitting it was the truth.
Before Lee could ponder more on the subject, her cell phone rang. The lighthearted “Moonlight Sonata” that chimed in her purse distracted her from the dark perplexities that were swirling around in her head.
“Hello?” She answered the call with a jovial greeting.
“Lee. It’s me.” There was a pause. Yes, she recognized the caller. Although he could not see her, she flinched.
“Shoot.” Another pause. A long one. “Well, Stu, what are you waiting for?” She was becoming impatient.
“We need to get together. I found something.” He inhaled loudly enough that she could hear him breathing. “Something pretty big.”
