Aouthu Billah (I Seek Refuge With Allah)
She sat in the dark. Alone within herself in a place filled with strangers. Every night, week after week, month after month. She came. Searching for him.
It was her duty, she had taken it upon herself.
To spare his mother the grief.
Her heart near breaking the moment she entered the room.
The room deathly silent, the projector humming a dirge as images flashed across the white-washed wall.
Faces of fathers, sons, nephews, nieces, mothers, children, friends, neighbors mutilated, burned, scared, contorted.
With each flicker, eager eyes searched for loved ones, lost ones.
As each face passed a sigh felt, hope renewed.
Suddenly, a cry would raise up, a name spoken through grief strucken lips, realization and recognition.
And so, they came night after night.
Strangers united with an unspeakable bond.
