Exhausted Mariana
After the longest and hardest day of her life, Mariana collapsed onto her sofa. Angelica flopped beside her on the floor. She had been running errands, carrying little trays of hors d’oeuvres, and was just as exhausted. But her mouth was still going.
“Mama! Did you see that tall man smile at me every time I brought him a sandwich? I liked him! I brought him many sandwiches, and drinks too! He was nice, he told me how pretty my dress was, and he sat with the prettiest ladies! Mama, I want to be a pretty lady when I grow up!”
She kept going and Mariana thought about that man with the “pretty ladies”. He was her lady boss’s brother, just back in town, making new friends and staying at the mansion. She would have to clean around him Monday. And those ladies were probably paid to hang on him tonight!
“Mama? Did you get lots of money? Can we go to the zoo, and the museum, and buy ice cream, and go shopping for new clothes, and all those things you say we’ll do one day?”
Mariana smiled, “Tomorrow, sweetie.”
