Autumn and Justin: She Was Young and Stupid

“What!?’ he hoarsely whispered aloud. “Then why didn’t you..?”
“Give you my number years ago?” I finished. “Because I couldn’t. I wasn’t allowed to.” I looked at his face to show him that I was being honest.

We had had a class together two years ago and he had asked me for my phone number, which I denied him. “I wanted to, but we had a prank caller that summer and my parents had it changed. They told me to only give my number out to my friends. I would have had to ask their permission back then.”

His green eyes were angry. They didn’t believe me. I had to patch this up.

“It’s the truth, sounds ridiculous, but it is. I’m sorry. You can have it now of you want it.” I offered.

His eyes softened, as he continued to search mine for lies, or mockery, but finding only honesty there, he relented. “Wait. You liked me, but wouldn’t give me your number because you had to ask permission?”

“Yes. I didn’t want to say that in front of everybody!”

“Then why didn’t you write it down?”

“Because I was young and stupid!”
