Ficlets

Poisons and Paranoia

“You’re being riddiculous!” Marlena shouted.

“Really, I overheard them in the parking lot!” Roger yelled back.

Roger and Marlena were out one frigid morning, headed to Starbucks for a morning coffee. Roger was convinced that he had heard two people in the parking lot planning his imminent death. One tall dark man whispered to the other.

“Death of Roger…..”

“Poison his coffee…”

Marlena was skeptical. “I really think it’s unlikely that two random people would poison your coffee.”

“Let’s just forget it OK?” Roger said.

They entered the coffee shop and ordered drinks. Within minutes they were sitting at a small table with two steaming hot lattes.

“Pass the fake sugars.” Marlena said.

Roger just kept staring at his drink.

“Oh my god,” Marlena said, “here let me drink it.” She took a sip, waited a moment then said, “See I’m fine.” She walked out of the restaurant.

Roger sighed and took a sip. Outside in the parking lot, Marlena Vasques keeled over; dead.
