“Don’t be ridiculous. Slythers can’t take the form of humans. So for right now, you’re the only one I can trust.” Guillaume raked his fingers through his hair.
“Then, how do I know you’re not one?” Amilie’s eyes widened.
“I would smell like a sewer. They give off this putrid smell, similar to that of a sewer’s. I can’t smell it. Florence can’t smell it, and neither can Mathieu. It’s the result of a run-in with them a few years back. They’re very persuasive. Be on the lookout for that.” Amilie plopped down next to him.
“You didn’t mean what you said before. You are starting to like me. It’s more than a responsibility.” Guillaume turned away from her.
“We need to find that tree.”
“Why?” She sat up.
“So Florence and I can return to our family. And so Mathieu can have a family, again. And so we don’t have to go through life without changing. So we can grow old and die. Amilie, what people don’t realize about an eternity, is that it lasts an eternity and a day.“
