The Girl in the Wool Overcoat pt 6

“Sara. That’s a nice name. It means ‘Princess,’ you know,” Jeremy said.

“I know,” Sara replied. She stuffed the cookies into her coat pocket.

“And your last name, Rosenthal. It means ‘rose valley.’ So I guess that makes you the princess of the valley of roses,” Jeremy quipped.

The girl froze. “Yes,” she sighed. “Yes, I suppose it does. See ya.”

Jeremy watched her leave the cafeteria with a funny feeling in the back of his head. “Tommy,” he said, drumming the girl’s spoon against the tabletop. “Do you know if Laura’s awake right now?”

“Probably not. It’s Sunday, they’re closed,” Tommy said, as he wheeled out the cleaning cart.

“In that case, we’ll call Child Protective Services tomorrow morning. I’ve got a bad feeling about this one.”

“What are you thinking?” Tommy asked.

“Abused runaway? I dunno. I just sling hash, I’m not a goddamn shrink,” Jeremy sighed. He pulled a washcloth out of the bucket and wrung it out as Tommy began mopping the floors. “Just got a funny feeling, is all.”
