Ficlets

The Glistening Moonlight of our Wasted Youth, Part 37: Wherein David meets his Birth Mother, and Jacob comes to terms with the death of Loretta

“What are you doing?”

“Me?”

“No, the other disembodied voice in this story. Of course I mean you.”

“Oh. Well, I’m writing a novel using Ficlets.”

“Doesn’t that have a 1,024 character limit?”

“Yes, but I’m posting it in small chunks.”

“Oh! So you’re putting up one segment a day, or…?”

“No, I’m writing one bit immediately after the other. I started this morning. I’m up to part 37.”

”...”

“What?”

“That’s… that’s not what Ficlets is for.”

“So?”

“Well, if you’re writing a longer story… Ficlets isn’t really ideal for that. There are other websites you could be using. Or you could set up a blog and post your story there. Ficlets isn’t designed for longer stories. Plus, isn’t it incredibly self-indulgent to write countless sequels to your own stories? Is that counter to the entire point of a collaborative writing website?”

“Why does it bug you so much, anyway? I’m enjoying myself and it’s not hurting anyone.”

“Look at it this way: Should you piss in a swimming pool just because you can?”
