I glare at him. The nerve! What is this, anyway? “I’m not singing alone,â? I hiss.
His eyes light up. “Great. That’s what I wanted.â? He pulls the microphone towards him again. “Change of plans, Kacey and myself will be singing a duet. Trust me, folks, you will not be disappointed.â?
I look into the audience hopelessly, and see Lily sitting at the very front looking pleased with herself. She winks at me and mouths “You can do thisâ?. I swallow hard.
The music starts, and I recognize it at once. I turn to Jack to yell at him- what is he doing- but he whispers “Did I mention you look amazing?â? and I can’t help but melt.
Oh, god, it’s starting. Jack sings the first two verses in the voice that I know so well, and then it’s time for the chorus. All at once, it’s our two voices, together.
“I am trying to say what I want to say, without having to say I love you.â?
I drop the mic and grab him by the shirt collar.
And then we can’t sing anymore, because our lips are locked.
