==no one but me==

While the woman passed by on the way to the front of the bus, no one tried to stop her. The bus driver attempted to get his radio out of the wire container next to the wheel, but didn’t move fast enough. The lady was up there in less than fifteen seconds.

I looked behind me, and I saw the girl who’d been sitting next to her, the teenager. At that point of seeing her expression, I somehow knew she’d commited no crime.

No one but me believed her.
No one except me could help her.

Rushing to the back of the bus, I threw myself in the seat across from her. I was surprised the bus was still moving; I guess the bus driver wouldn’t give up that easily.

“Okay, so I’m assuming you’ve never been in a situation like this before,” I said hurriedly; the shooter at the front of the bus looked ready to take over the wheel.

She shook her head, completely confused.

“That’s good. If you see that lady take hold of the wheel, hold on to the seat in front of you, and if anything else happens, just follow what I do.”
