band camp: day 1

This one time at band camp..

Well, there were a lot of things at band camp. And when I say a lot, I mean it. Marching band is not just for the nerds. Trust me, I know enough people in marching band (including myself) to understand this fact entirely.

I hate it when they call us nerds. Hardly anyone does anymore, because hardly anyone who would want to make fun of band kids isn’t friends with a band kid.

Band is a lot more difficult than anyone could know unless they’ve actually been through band camp. On our first day, our band director gave us these charts that showed the direction we went on the field. We went to our beginning sets, then had to march out and stop twenty-eight counts onto the field.

Sounds easy? It shouldn’t.

For someone who had no experience, it was like being on a stage and forgetting your lines. Everyone else knew what to do, and I was utterly clueless. I’d been excited for this day for two months, and now I was dreading the moment when we would step onto the field.
