Philosophizing About Proportions
I watched the Northern Lights whip around the sky above me.
To and fro, back and forth, sinuously moving across the black velvet like a gleaming jade ribbon.
Aurora Borealis.
Ever since I was a child, I loved the sound of the word; I loved saying it, and one of my greatest wishes had been to watch the phenomenon of Nature with my own eyes.
I had only been urged further and further by the books I had read on galaxies and the wonders that lie beyond our solar system.
As I observed the flickering light in the onyx cloak of the night, I thought about proportions.
If Earth – our entire world as we know it – is tiny in terms of planets, what are we? If we are infinitesimal, what are our germs like? How small are the germs of the germs?
Humans are nothing but specks of dust in an endless desert.
We fight.
We kill.
We torture.
What does it amount to? Will it change the universe?
Probably not.
Do we have to save our planet?
Absolutely.
Are we doing anything about it?
That is up to you.
