Perfect day

I walked into the house and quietly shut the door behind me. The home was dark and asleep. I locked the door and tip-toed into the kitchen. I set my keys on the table and eyed the clock on the microwave. 12:47 a.m. Four deaths in a sixteen hour shift. Nothing new when working in the ICU . Six more hours and it’s back to work. I crept down the hall and opened the door to our bedroom. Julia was sound asleep, I didn’t want to wake her. I stepped toward the closet and changed from my scrubs to some pajama pants and a T-shirt in the dark. Exhausted, I climbed into bed. Julia woke and rolled her slender body toward me.
“Hey babe, I’m home.” I said in a whisper.
Julia leaned up slowly and pressed her lips against mine.
Two, maybe three seconds later she ended the kiss I’d been waiting for by parting her lips’ meet with mine.
“Hey baby, how was your day?” she said, sleep in her voice.
“Couldn’t have been better.” I whispered. Sleep filled my body as i repeated the words.
“Couldn’t have been better.”
