“Cecilia! Get down here!”
I thundered down the stairs, all in a flurry. “What? What is it?”
“You will not believe this!” my brother said from the couch.
My mother took out a stalk, all knobby with lumps. “This is how Brussels sprouts grow,” she said dramatically.
My eyes widened in disbelief. I made a few inarticulate squawks of surprise. I’d always thought they came from the ground as sprouts! At that moment, this was earth-shattering!
Finally, I let loose a couple of stunned cries of, “Really?!”
My mother nodded.
I continued to stare at it.
I stared at the stalk a while longer.
