Great job with a mix of heavy on the ‘in the moment’ description and details outside that scope to set up more of the story. I also liked the hints at locale rather than just blurting out where he has arrived. The giant block of text doesn’t help readability and could benefit from some parsing out, my usual critique here on ficlets, I know.
