“Maybe,â€? Adam spoke to Joe rather than Kate, “I just want everything to be perfect.â€?

“Adam,â€? Kate had fallen for it, “that’s sweet, but ridiculous. Nothing’s perfect.â€?

“Well, I don’t see any harm in trying,â€? Adam turned to her now.

“Any place would be perfect if it were ours. We would make it beautiful.â€?

“Genuine hardwood floors, all over the apartment,â€? Joe said, looking away from the couple, “except for the bathroom and kitchen – that’s linoleum. Easier to clean.â€? His voice was barely more than a mutter, and it was fading fast.

“I just want the place to feel like home,â€? Adam said to Kate.

“Did I mention it’s a two-bedroom?â€? Joe tried again, but louder.

“Cool,â€? Adam nodded. “I could have storage space for the DJ equipment.â€?

“Or we could have a nursery,â€? Kate said coyly.

“Well there you go,â€? Joe regretted mentioning the second bedroom. Still, she wasn’t his girlfriend, and the best situation was to sell her a place and walk away.
