There were countless other incidents in which those around Callie were harmed, and she got off scott free. The worst of these was the state fair, August 5th, 2005. It was Callie’s thirteenth birthday, and she and her mother were riding the ferris wheel. It malfunctioned. Callie survived the fall, her mother took a blow to the head and died instantly.
Yes, everyone always told Callie how lucky she was to survive these things. But somehow, she herself could not agree. It was as if fate was toying with her, torturing her like in those crime shows. Where the mass murderer kills off all the victims friends and family, saving the victim for last.
Callie really wished fate would hurry up and get it over with, especially considering it was August 4th, the night before her fifteenth birthday. Needless to say, she was more than a little concerned.
