The Other Woman: Part 5a: James
“When your wife sues you . . .” Jessica’s words kept whirring around in my mind. When. Not if.
I got home as soon as I could, but actually getting out of the car, walking up the drive, and entering the house was a different story. Hellish traffic was nothing compared to the look I knew I’d see in my wife’s eyes.
“I’m sorry.” I stood in our living room while she just stared sightlessly in my direction.
“When did you stop loving me?”
“Never, my love.” She was not happy I’d brought up our wedding song.
“Remember when Jake was four and we told him I was pregnant?” I did; it was for her first miscarriage. “All he did was cry because he didn’t want to share our love. We said loving the new baby didn’t mean loving him any less.”
“He didn’t believe us.”
“Now I know why,” she looked at me. “I thought I was your center – everything you wanted and needed in a woman. I know it’s unrealistic; I knew it then. But still I believed. Now I have the proof of my mistake, and that your love faded.”
