Charred... Everything
“What did it sound like?” Judas whispered.
“It sounded like… nothing. Like something you would hear outside your window, but your parents would say ‘it’s nothing’.” Zooey answered. They rose together, and made their way to the tip of the mountain.
“We have to stop now.” Judas panted.
“Just a few more steps.” Zooey answered her. His forehead was beaded with sweat, but they had to at least make it to the top.
“I can’t go anymore, Zoo!” Judas cried.
“Of course you can! Take three more steps, and then, I’ll carry you.” Judas complied slowly.
When they had at last reached the top, Zooey pried Judas off his back. “Look, Judy.” He pointed at the charred remains of… everything.
“I told you I smelled something burning.” She whispered in awe.
