Playing Innocent
I grinned at Julia as she wandered in from her bedroom the next morning. “Morning, sleepyhead.”
“Morning.”
“So what’d you do all day yesterday?” I asked casually.
Julia blinked. “Huh? I worked and came home, you know that.”
“On Saturday?”
“What? This is Saturday.”
“No, this is Sunday, yesterday was Saturday.”
Julia looked suspiciously at me. “Is this some kind of practical joke?”
“See for yourself.” I gestured at the Sunday paper, sitting on the sofa next to me. She stared at it, then went over and checked the date. “You were asleep when I left yesterday morning, and when I got home last nightâmaybe you slept the day through?
“I guess I must have,” Julia said slowly. “I can’t think of any other explanation.”
“Alien abduction, maybe?” I offered helpfully.
She snorted. “Yeah, right. Well, crud. I lost a whole day of my weekend.”
“But at least you’re well-rested, right?”
“I guess I am.”
I felt guilty for the deception, but it couldn’t be helped. She’d probably not take the truth very well.
