The Second Party

I learned the time and place from Max, and he even offered to pick me up. I declined.

He’d offered last time, too, and I would have said yes both times if I hadn’t known that it was really him just trying to prevent me from leaving early.

I put on a little makeup this time, looking at myself in the mirror more than I usually would have, maybe.

Then I headed outside and got into my car, following the directions that I’d written down quickly from Max’s dictation over the phone.

Soon enough I reached the place. There was already a line of cars in the street, loud music coming from the house.

I got out of my car and headed in, and found Max. Monica and a few other girls were practically draped over him, but he apologized and left them to come talk to me.

“Wow, Jo. Someone really dressed up tonight.”

“Shut up.”

“Oh my dear little Josephine. In love for the first time,” he said mockingly, shaking his head.

I wanted to punch him. How had he convinced me to come here?
