Evolution
She looked at her curry stained hands and wondered at the difference in eating. Everything in the grocery store was an exercise in overabundance. People in her country were dying from this excess in corn syrup and transfat. Her country had done well for itself as this sickness was actually a measure of health and wealth.
Humans had evolved to conserve this precious energy and, indeed many others without this convenient access to pre-packaged filled aisles continued to starve. She wondered if the rich on her planet would evolve away from the poor so that their physical bodies would actually begin to behave and appear different. What sort of marks would her people carry once their bodies stopped storing fat. Would richness or poverty be the mark of disgrace? And who would prevail if global catastrophe and starvation came again?
