Sky-Needle School

School was shiny too.
It had gotten colder the longer the trip, so I knew we were going somewhere North. More children chosen for school joined me on the way. Ameye, a girl, reminded me far too much of Sierra for comfort, though she talked to me quite often. Falnar was a boy my age with a far-more-than-natural interest in all things bugs.
Then there was Joulare. No one knew exactly how to describe her. She was a deep tan, signifying hard work and extremely poor birth, but far more educated than any tutored noble I’d ever met. She had huge brown eyes that stared testily at you if you talked to her. Her high cheekbones and long neck only made her more haughty in our eyes.
When we finally arrived at school, she alone was not impressed by the view of the ocean or the tall shiny buildings, so tall they seemed to poke holes in the sky. We all stood in groups, murmuring excitedly at the sights. She stood alone and looked bored and uninterested in the glassy-smooth sky-needles.
