Mommy Dearest

A tinkling of small bells sounding from my pocket thankfully distracted me from his sudden rush to leave me. But as soon as I heard the steely voice on the other side of the line, I wasn’t so thankfull.
“Hello,” she said, sounding angry. Always sounding angry.
I cleared my throat, inwardly smacking my forehead for not investing in a different ringtone for her number. That way, I could just let it go to voicemail.
“Hi mom,” I cheered, pulling a fake smile too.
“Where have you been?” she demanded.
My face fell, what was the point in even trying.
“With Tom,” I breathed. Careful now, Ashley, don’t get mad yet
“I don’t like him,” she hit me. Bitch! The first voice tried to warn me again, but I didn’t listen. Bitch!!!!
“Well I do,” I snapped, closing my phone in my fist.
I took deep breaths, knowing what I had done was wrong. I silently told the second voice to shut up.
My phone rang again. I was in no mood to answer, but it could be Tom.
“Get your failure butt home.” What? No hello?
