Justen's Mom, the "Official Report"
“Your uncle, he was not always that way.” The mysterious person looked troubled. “But, sometimes, things occur.”
These people, for example, they did not kill your uncle. There is something beyond what we call ‘life’. Sometimes it all comes together. Your uncle. . .his brain was diseased, he was not the man you knew.”
The Korean grocer, the Hasidic Jew, a rabbi!, the Moslem (an Iman!), and others came to Justen, offered their condolences. But each spoke in his or her own tongue, or in speech not “native” to him or her. Yet he understood each one, as if they spoke American english!
“No, there is no ‘religious revival’ here, as some might say.” said the mysterious figure. “But the ancients reported such things the best they could. Rest now, all be ‘normal’ soon.”
The officers entered speaking blankly: “The official report is that your uncle was hit by an unknown vehicle.”
The taxi driver stood there, he spoke in Columbian “Yes, I saw the car, he did not see your uncle. Streetlights were out. So sad”
