Rare literary device: Onomatopoeia
Why is it rare?: Because nobody can spell it.
Examples: hiss, buzz, thump, smack, etc.

I think it held together rather well as a story, but I’m not sure how rare onomatopoeia is – comic books are famous for it.

i agree, not your best work (but then again, you’ve written some phenomenal ficlets, so it’s not really much of a comparison), but not your worst either (do you have a worst?)
