Legends .. as a child I was told a legend about a boat race between two Scottish clans to determine land ownership. The first to touch the shore would be the victors. The MacDonalds and the McLeods were neck and neck but as they approached land, the McLeods started to gain pace and speed. The MacDonald clan chief, facing imminent loss, chopped off his hand [or another’s on board, it wasn’t entirely clear] and threw it onto land, thus claiming it before the rivals.
But what was the aftermath?
