An Apology to My Students – This began years ago, when I was an English tutor. I got to thinking about having great writers all in the same anachronistic English class, & how the teacher would grade their work. As the brackets imply, this is not a contest or a challenge; it’s not even a story. There is no plot or character development. If you want to have the good instructor insulting some of your favorites, please add prequels or sequels. Please also include notes so that everyone can follow new authors.
Shakespeare – Mr./Ms. comment is a reference to no one really being sure who Shakespeare was, and to Virginia Woolf’s ‘A Room of One’s Own.’ Shakespeare thought his poems would make him famous, & his plays were to pay the rent. As for which poem is being referenced here: any of them. Dorothy Parker – known for witty comments in reviews or eating lunch at the Algonquin, she called her poems ‘light verse’. Poems referenced: “News Itemâ?, Résumé, and One Perfect Rose. e. e. cummings – almost any poem.
I’m still bitter about how one of my college essays was graded. – THX ~ Me too, but at least we can take comfort that they wouldn’t have been any nicer to famous authors.
I’m still bitter that a high school teacher graded my finest work with a B and I took it to college and turned it in again, twice, and got an A both times. I’m not really a literature buff, but this was pretty cool.
