I knew the previous work relationships that had bloomed at the theater prior to my arrival were well publicized and even more so, well criticized among other the employees. Needless to say, I wanted to keep Mike and ours “off-the-clock” encounters on the DL.
Mike, on the other hand, now felt that he had bragging rights and began to circulate the story through out the work place. I should’ve guessed he would, though. One of the first things he told me after we hooked up was Jason’s, my manager, announced bet on the second day of my employment, “First person to bang the new girl gets $20.” I was undoubtedly offended for multiple reasons, none more so than my surprisingly low monetary value. “Jason owes me twenty bucks,” he joked suggestively. I scowled at him, accepting his immediate withdrawal of the off-color comment.
Jason, my boss, is a 26 year old father of a 2 1/2 year old, unmarried and slightly unhappy. He does his best to torture me about Mike. And now people say, “It’s because he’s jealous.”
