Ficlets

Is it what it once was?

We walked out of the ski club meeting, hand in hand, walking with a merry hop in our steps.
“Why were we the only ones there…?” I wondered aloud.
“well, there were plenty of people there, just no one from our group.” she replied. “it’s funny. Jack said he’d be there…”
Jack…
My fists clenched as I let her hand go. Jack, the one she’d left me to take her shot at. Looks like she wasn’t entirely out of bullets.
“what”? Did I do something wrong?” Mary asked me.
“If you don’t know that you did anything wrong, then no. No you didn’t.” I replied sourly. The only thing my mind was processing through was how it had gotten to be this way. How every word said could mean anything, how any truth could be a lie… I’ll have to ponder for a while.
