A prequel to “Hard Work,” but not a prequel to Alexa’s wonderful “Hard Work, part 2” or my own “Holes In Space.” “Emmaline” takes place in a different universe that somehow leads to the same place as “Hard Work.” I hope it’s an example of how authors might create many branches off a single ficlet.
Feel free to write sequels or prequels to this or to any of the pieces in the chain. (You could even write a sequel to this that doesn’t include “HW” at all, turning this into an unrelated, parallel story!

uber dark prequel, a-whole-nother layer of tragedy to the whole idea.

I liked it as much as I could like a story where an infant dies.
