The Plea

by Ben Paddon

I made a promise to you. I didn’t keep it. I’m sorry. I know that right now there probably aren’t any words I can say that will convince you to forgive me, but I feel like I have to say them anyway, if only to make myself feel better.

You need to know that I didn’t make the promise knowing I couldn’t keep it. I didn’t. I wasn’t procrastinating, or just saying things to make you feel better. I honestly wanted to be able to keep my word. Sometimes, though, like just conspires against you. Sometimes things happen that, for whatever reason, prevent you from doing what you need or want to do. I would feel a lot better about this if one of those things had prevented me from keeping that promise.

But we all know that isn’t the case here. This is my fault. Mine entirely. And as easy as it may be to get into a repetitious pattern here, I want you to know that I promise you, I promise I will make it up to you somehow. I will.

I will.

Good sense of desperation with realism. And good job making it sound genuine while still not really saying what promise was broken, nor what act constituted failing to keep it.
