Eva Interferes

I took down the information for the new client and was prepared to begin drawing up a new account for them, when Jake stumbled out of the stairwell door.

I watched, amused, as he ran into things, looking off into the distance instead of at his feet. The shocked expression on his face was very telling. Poor Jake, he never knew what hit him. He glanced around to see if anyone was watching and we made eye contact. I approached him.

“Seems you’re the father.” He looked completely startled. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell.” I smirked. “It’s a shame though. All that hard earned money going to diapers.” I left him bewildered. I had never spoken to him before. He wasn’t my type.

Annette emerged from the stairwell, head down. I ducked into the breakroom and poured myself more coffee so I would have an excuse to pass her cubicle.

She wasn’t there. I went to the ladies room. She was washing the mascara off of her face.
“Eva!” Her soulful eyes widened in surprise, looking less soulful.

“Annette. Let’s do lunch.”
