Van Mantra Repeated

by Richard Peck

The old man slid the dial, and it was clear it was Van Mantra.

“…to our side of the fight. Oh, and keep a bright light handy.”

The radio clicked.

“Keep close to your pets. Some may be able to sense the enemy when near.”

It clicked again

“If you have a gun, keep it ready. The effects of firearms on our enemy is unknown, but it’s worth a try.”

It clicked again, but was drowned out by a listener in the stadium.

“We’ve already heard this! He came back from the dead to tell us what we know?!”

“QUIET!”

The radio clicked and the attention was back on the crackled voice.

“…to our side of the fight. Oh, and keep a bright light handy.”

Another listener spoke up.

“Its a recording, the clicks between sentences. Somebody put this together and is playing it on this station. What channel is that?

“91.7, why?

“Hey, that station is just south of here!”

”...Then we hed south!”

The ear-splitting roar was heard, and someone activated a blow horn as the stadium shook.
