Ellie Meets the Superjudge

Ellie ran behind Gates. This was their usual routine: he’d run just a bit ahead, check it out, and if he got in trouble, she got him out.

She saw him ahead, talking to a thing. Must be the cosmic wank-stain. She hadn’t wanted to admit that she had no idea what a ‘Superjudge’ was.

The beast pointed a weapon (she figured) at Gates.

“No!” She jumped into the clearing, weapon drawn.

“This doesn’t concern you,” the beast spoke compassionately. “This cosmic wank’s been sleeping with my wife.”

“I have not!”

“I have proof,” the beast handed her an electronic thing. She looked at the screen, trying not to pay attention to how close Lem stood as he read the note over her shoulder.

“It sounds like you,” she whispered, ” . . . scientist . . . adventurer.”

“Gratifying lover . . . most intelligent . . .,” Lem added in a half-joke.

She felt tears welling up. They had no relationship, but she’d always felt – in spite of his reputation – that they had a chemistry. Apparently, it was one-sided.
