So, Alec was responsible for Tunguska? Damn, all my money was on Tesla’s death ray gone awry. And a cameo appearance by Rasputin? Chocked full of goodness.
A Scorecard For Those Playing At Home: Professor Mihailov is a completely made-up character. (Hm… there could be a series of ficlets in that…) The mad monk, as CMTKOM picked up on, is Rasputin, who would go on to play a role in the tsar’s downfall. The Tunguska event was a mysterious explosion in Siberia that flattened acres of trees. It might have been a cometary impact… or it could have been an overambitious vampire trying to open a door to Hell. (more)
(continued) It was established earlier that Alec served Vlad Tepes, a brutal Romanian prince who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In this series, Tepes halted the invasion of the Ottoman Turks (like the real Tepes) and was a vampire (like the fictional Tepes). Pink Floyd, of course, is famous for their elaborate light show and concert sound. Anne Rice ruined a perfectly good series of vampire novels by revealing that Lestat had fed from a godlike vampire. Does that cover all the references?
Oh, one more: The Shanyagir tribe lived in Siberia and some members of the tribe witnessed blast. I would have never rememered the name of the tribe but for wikipedia. (Thanks, wikipedia!) I originally thought “Shanyagir shaman” in an earlier draft, but wasn’t sure if the Shanyagir had shamans or not. Yeah, now I’m worrying about historical accuracy. ;-)
