When Happiness Walks Out

Faith touches too few, and Sadness sits by too many.

Blank expression, there’s a man in the corner who’s met Desperation on a dark one-way street. And he knows he’s in deeper than he ever meant to be, but he can’t seem to claw his way out.

There’s a woman with blue eyes who knew Happiness long ago. She’s got the laugh-lines on her face, but now Memory is her only friend, and the light has left her eyes that used to glitter.

The girl in the back has been tapped on the shoulder by Love. But the boy standing next to her has been struck by Indifference.

Someones sits by the window, watching the snow fall softly into the dense grove of trees outside, recalling all of those nights by the phone with Loneliness.

Doubt creeps in through the back door of everyone’s mind. Contentment is tricky, and Awe ever more scarce.

Imagination? Only someone we befriended as a child and discarded as we grew out of ourselves.

And always, Death stalks the back of the room, keeping constant check over Life.
