No Rats Were Hurt In The Making Of This Story (Although One Or Two Exploded)

Dr. Reinhardt carefully removed a piece of rat skin from his goggles and turned to a new page in his notebook.

“Important: Put lid on cage before testing experimental enlargement ray”, he wrote. Then, sighing, he turned the apparatus control knob from “awesomely huge” to “pretty darned big”. The more exciting settings would have to wait until he’d sorted out the teething troubles.

“Lorencz!” he roared. “Y-yes, master?” replied his hunchbacked servant, startled.

“We will continue with the experiment. Put a new rat into the test cage.”

There was a long silence before Lorencz responded. “This…this one won’t e-explode, will it, m-master?”

We have talked about this before, idiot! Explosions are a vital part of progress! Now stop complaining and bring me another rat!” Reinhardt bellowed, his patience wearing thin.

Muttering under his breath, Lorencz pulled a snowy white rat from the box and placed it in the cage. “The experimental rat is in, m-master.”

“Good. Now, let us see progress in action.”
