Together, Again
Scarlet looked both ways before crossing the street to a dimly lit convience store. Josiah blindly followed
“Hey. Mister. Can I use your phone?” Scarlet asked urgently.
The man eyed them suspiciously.
“Why should I?” He sneered. “Listen, hotcakes, I don’t got time for no tricks. The phone’s back here.” Scarlet glared befored dialing Holden’s number.
“Holden, it’s Scarlet. Yeah, we’re fine… It was Charlie, thank goodness… No, he just dissolved into a pile of nerves…” She turned to the man. “What street is this?”
“Monroe.”
“Monroe, Holden. Yeah we’ll try to wait on the corner… I know that you’re sorry… Please, not now. Just hurry.” With a bang, the receiver was back on the hook. Josiah dutifully followed Scarlet outside.
“I’ve been silent most of the ride, but, I got to know what’s going on.” Josiah stopped her. Firmly, she took hold of his shoulders, not noticing they were in the middle of the street.
“I am a criminal.” Tires screeched, and Holden waved them into the car.
