Departing Gift

The woman dropped the tear soaked handkerchief. The lawyer smiled sympathetically as her mouth gaped in disbelief.

“What did you just say?â€? She asked, suddenly breathless.

“He left you the entirety of his estate,â€? the man answered calmly, “roughly ten million dollars.â€?

She shook her head. It was impossible. Their life together had been modest at best. There was no way David had that much money. And for her to not even know about it!

“No way…â€?

David’s lawyer stood from the desk, moved around it, then placed a hand on her shaking shoulder. He gave the poor woman a manila folder with all the information inside.

“Look this over. I’ll give you some time.â€?

Hesitantly, she took the paperwork. She started reading the moment he’d left the room.

It took several attempts, but the truth sunk in. Her fingers ran over her stomach where David’s other gift would bloom with time. He always said that he’d take care of her.

It was true.

“You dirty bastard…â€? She said with a weeping laugh.
