If you weren’t under letter count pressure, I’d suggest changing the Doc’s title to “Herr Doktor” (which is more accurate for a Doc from, what I’m guessing, was the Anus Mundi).

I’m just going to attribute that to the drugs they gave him.

I attributed it to sarcastic whistling in the dark/bluffing; a kind of Whedonesque line if, you will (more Mal than Spike, if you don’t mind crossing universes and genres).
I suspect CMTKOM and Nick remember, but for those of you who may have missed it: Alec does know how to do Dracula’s “gaseous form” trick. (Last seen in iss. http://ficlets.com/stories/11263 – “Denying God” – Ed.!) It’ll be interesting to see whether the MiBs have taken that into account….

It does sound like a pretty invasive surgery.
