One Heart Dead

A subtle vibration rippled through the river floor as Adrien’s body shuddered in the mud. The surrounding fish scattered. Back and forth, he went, his upper body jerking and thrashing with a will of its own. Adrien’s mind was still lifeless, but it seemed his physical body was re-animated.

Suddenly, the thrashing stopped, Adrien’s eyes exploded through a myriad of colors, and a bilious black cloud erupted from his mouth. It resembled oil in appearance, but it didn’t rise to the surface. Instead, it whirled into a vague form on the muddy floor.

Finally, it solidified. Two deep, red eyes flickered into existence, followed by a somehow dry silk suit. The crimson glow contrasted eerily with the murky green of the water.

“One heart dead, setting the other free,” the Caretaker said, drifting voice resounding effortlessly though the water.

His body became a blurred silhouette as he faded into the depths, leaving Adrien’s body encased in the river mud.
