This was all for Tarzan… Winters survives and one of Shub-Niggurath’s children is finally seen (we’re using Shub-Niggurath as another name for Lilith, which works). So…
And for those unfamiliar with Shub-Niggurath, “she” comes from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and you can read all about “her” here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shub-Niggurath
“Black Goat of the Woods” is a term for Shub-Niggurath; see my post above for that.
Alec’s not infected… he carried Lilith/Shub-Niggurath in him for five years. I think there were some… um… consequences in the long term for him. I wish I had thought of it earlier, as I would’ve dropped some hints before now.
More on what I was saying: Back in “Catching A Fly (pt. 2)” (http://ficlets.com/stories/13003) Alec seems to get a small power jump, overpowering a trained professional’s mind (Dr. Hoven) and whatnot. I just thought it was a good in to express that Alec might not be merely Alec anymore, but something far more sinister.
I think it was always easy to underestimate just how sinister Alec could be – even I played him for laughs most of the time. Even without Shub-Niggurath’s aid, he might well have been able to prey on the insecurities, resentments, hubris and bloodlust of an overconfident, narcissistic, aging Nazi who’d never met the like of one of Dracula’s scions before. Winters should never have underestimated Alec and overestimated Hoven. Shub-Niggurath may have picked a better host than even it knows.
Maybe it was the comic relief aspect of Alec that kinda made me underestimate him, so that when he pulled something particularly nasty out… I took it as an advantage to completely nasty.
Is he still Alec? Yes. Is he also something more than Alec? Oh yes.
When you gestate something like Shub-Niggurath (aka Lilith) in you for five years, I imagine “she”’d revamp your system quite a bit. And now that she no longer needs the revamps, Alec has transformed into something… different. But still the same.
Oh, whatever Alec is, I’m hoping he finally gets what’s been coming to him for several centuries now. I think he may well be a loose end to be “tied up” in this story, but we’ll see: I look forward to seeing what you folks do with it. (I’d offer to help, but NaNoWriMo waits for no man, etc.) Carry on, carry on!
