The Purple Rose

“Lila! Go fetch water from the well!” Running out the door with the water buckets over my shoulder I almost ran into Mr. Regetti, our very heavy cook. I just missed running straight into the breakfast tray he was carrying.
“Sorry Mr. Regetti!” I didnt have time to hear his complaint about children running about recklesly. I had to hurry if I wanted to meet Nina at the well. Nina is my best friend; we grew up together in the same neighborhood and our parents would take turns watching us while they went out to take care of errands. I was too late by the time I got to the well. It was well past the normal time that Nina would be there at. Lila slowly took the water pales and filled them up. Then I grudgingly started to walk back to the Hemphory’s house.
I am a laundry maid and I work for Mrs.McLaughlin, the head of the maids. It is a dirty job that I took over after my mother died. My father left the family when I was only six and my mother died when just a few months ago. I am now thirteen years old…
