It's Not Paranoia--It's Caution
Superstitious had been used to describe me more than once. It was an accurate word compared to the many other, untrue names I had acquired. It was also assumed that I was afraid of vampires, leading me to be superstitious. I was not afraid.
I used garlic as decoration, put it under my pillow, cooked with it, etc. I had a crucifix on my door; on every door, now that I thought about it. I always wore one around my neck. I had holy water at the doorway to my house, and at the doorway of my bedroom. I had stakes under the couch, behind picture frames, in cupboards, above doors. Everywhere.
I had read somewhere that vampires were actually afraid of black cats. They went out of their way to avoid the creatures. That’s how the local animal shelter became one black cat short. I was out the door before I had reached the sentence’s end mark. The best day of my life was the day I bought Selene.
