How Girl, Boy, and Dog Ended Up in the Same Car (True Story Challenge)
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” he says.
We’re standing in the rain on his porch. He’s got his dog on her leash.
I had just shut the door.
“You just shut the door,” he says. I wonder if he is coming to some kind of point.
He tries the door knob. It is clearly locked.
“Do you realize that we’re locked out now?” he yells over the rain.
I stare at him. “You mean you locked it from the inside before you closed the screen door, and just left it open?”
He nods.
“Who does that?!” I half-yell. “Please tell me you have a key.”
“I have a key.”
“Really?”
“No.”
His dog continues to wag her tail at the rain.
“So what are we supposed to do?” I ask. We are both already clearly soaked.
“Do you have your car keys with you, or are they inside too?”
“I’ve got them.”
“We can drive over and get a key from my dad at work.”
So we pile into the car.
“What about the dog?” he asks.
She’s standing in the rain, wagging her tail, soaking wet.
I sigh.
“Well, put her in the back seat, I don’t have all day!”
