Ficlets

Saved

Thankfully, we got him to the ER in time. The vet there, Dr. Fitzpatrick, was very fond of me; She used to give me crash courses in veterinary science. She says I might even be a vet tech in an emergency.

Ryuuki and I waited outside the ER, for a sign that the kitten was doing O.K. Even Coco sat still for a moment, hand on her paws, a resigned look in her eyes; Her button nose was going steady.

Dr. Fitzpatrick came out of the ER.
We both jumped; Even Coco raised her head.

“The kitten’s fine,” Dr. Fitzpatrick said.
I let out a sigh of relief. “Thank God,” I stroked Coco’s fur.
“It’s a good thing you came so fast, or we might have been too late. I’m glad you came,” Dr. Fitzpatrick was then called by another vet;

Ryuuki and I sat in silence.
“Did you hear that?”
“What?”
“She said that if we hadn’t gotten here faster the kitten may have died.”
“I heard.”
“That means if you hadn’t met me…”
“Oh, shaddup, for Pete’s sake. Your yammering gives me a headache,” I said irritably.
“You were so nice to the kitten.”
